Modernize the City's public facilities and infrastructure, reduce operating costs, and impact the local environment
The City of Milpitas, located in Silicon Valley, California, serves over 80,000 residents. The city partnered with OPTERRA to implement a comprehensive smart city energy and water savings program.
The project began with an evaluation of the city’s public facilities, services, and infrastructure needs. Opterra recommended a range of energy and water conservation measures to enhance environmental and economic benefits. To create a resilient infrastruction, Opterra’s microgrid solution includes solar energy and battery storage to provide backup power during outages, ensuring essential public services remain operational. LED lighting upgrades standardize lighting across city parks, sports facilities, and streetlights, improving public safety. And modernizing the water infrastructure has enhanced water quality and leak resolution.
Milpitas’ City Council approved the program, which includes infrastructure upgrades and energy-saving measures. The city is forecast to save over $1.5 million annually in energy and water costs, with a net lifetime savings of over $30 million.
