Achieving San José's Smart Streetlight Vision

San José, CA

The City of San José will be the first U.S. city to install energy efficient smart streetlights citywide. In collaboration with OpTerra Energy Services, the City has retrofitted more than 18,100 streetlights to high performing, energy efficient LED streetlights to date. The new smart streetlights cast a brighter, more evenly distributed light, improve monitoring, allow remote dimming, and provide real-time energy reporting -- all while using half of the energy that conventional LPS and HPS streetlights use. The streetlights will capture $30 million in savings over the program lifetime and reduce carbon emissions by 1,480 metric tons, equivalent to removing 312 cars from the road.
