Jurupa Unified School District

The Opportunity

The Jurupa Unified School District in Riverside, California is committed to providing modern learning environments to prepare students for the challenges of today and tomorrow. Serving 20,500 K-12 students every school year, the District sought out the development of a customized energy savings program to generate needed revenue and to improve the overall infrastructure performance of district sites. Jurupa also strived to create a platform for enhanced student learning opportunities and long-term environmental stewardship through the implementation of their energy program.

The Partnership

In November 2011, Jurupa Unified School District selected the OpTerra Energy Services team to design, engineer and implement a transformative energy and education program across the district. Every step along the way, OpTerra addressed the District’s mission to promote student achievement, and helped drive new sources of funding for other district initiatives through energy savings.

Leveraging OpTerra’s Envision™ energy education program, district participants identified how they would link and customize the installed energy technologies to the classroom in order to promote real-world learning opportunities. Through a portfolio of robust technical energy solutions, including solar and lighting retrofits, coupled with Envision™, teachers were able to incorporate science, math and energy-related lesson plans along with hands-on solar kits to demonstrate real-world application of STEM concepts.

The Impact

Through their multi-phase partnership with OpTerra, Jurupa USD has reduced their annual energy costs by 42 percent. Their commitment to incorporating education opportunities into the vision for the larger energy program has engaged teachers and students around translating the science of the large-scale solar program to direct classroom learning activities. Now the home of the largest PV system at a K-12 district in Riverside County, Jurupa has reduced their carbon footprint by avoiding nearly 3,500 metric tons of CO2 emissions. Jurupa’s commitment to improving the learning environment has set the tone for their next chapter of success, positively impacting all members of the community.

The Technical Scope

  • 2.7 megawatts of solar PV power capacity and energy efficiency improvements at 27 school sites
  • Replaced 400 air conditioning units that were more than 20 years old
  • Upgraded more than 21,000 lighting fixtures
