Great Valley School District
Located in the suburbs of Greater Philadelphia, Great Valley School District serves more than 4,000 students across six K–12 schools. Committed to giving students at every school access to technology, the District wanted to install clean solar power that would save money while allowing students to learn by interacting with the system at work
Great Valley School District sought OpTerra Energy Services to design and build a large-scale solar program that provided clean energy and an educational component to integrate the project into student curricula. With a $500,000 Energy Harvest Grant from the State of Pennsylvania to partially fund the project, a 161-kilowatt roof-mounted solar program was installed at Great Valley Middle School.
Through this comprehensive program, the District is accomplishing significant financial savings, contributing to environmental sustainability and enriching the educational environment for its students. In addition to saving the District $1.2 million in energy costs over 15 years, the solar program makes the school more self-sufficient, producing up to 25 percent of the clean electricity the school needs to operate on a peak demand day.
Every day, students are learning by doing as they work with data from computer screens that monitor the solar project technology. Through incorporating solar technology and energy education into the curricula, the District has raised environmental awareness and promoted energy consciousness among students.
